Scottsdale Community College (SCC) has been nationally recognized by the League of Innovation in the Community College for leadership in creative, student-centered learning with Escape the Viral Vortex: A Fact-Checking Escape Room Game, developed by Serene Rock and Dr. Michael Dzbenski. This groundbreaking program was also recently named the Innovation of the Year for the Maricopa Community College District, following a competitive process across all 10 Maricopa colleges.
Escape the Viral Vortex reimagines information and media literacy instruction as an interactive, escape room-style experience. Students are immersed in a fast-moving digital landscape filled with viral posts, misleading claims, and manipulated media. To successfully “escape,” they must apply practical skills such as identifying information manipulation techniques, comparing sources, finding evidence, and verifying images and videos. As generative AI and social media continue to reshape how information is created and shared, these skills are increasingly essential.
Inspired by Dzbenski’s use of logic and word puzzles in teaching, Rock expanded the idea into a dynamic learning activity that blends engagement with real-world relevance. The project has grown to include themed variations like the Wellness Whirlpool, Business News Blizzard, and Climate Cyclone, allowing it to be integrated across disciplines and campus events. The response from students, faculty, and staff has been overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing its impact.
Rock’s creative approach builds practical research and digital information skills, while Dzbenski’s leadership in immersive learning and emerging technologies continues to elevate student engagement at SCC. Together, their work exemplifies the college’s commitment to innovation and collaboration.
“This award is a tremendous honor for Scottsdale Community College,” said Dr. Eric Leshinskie, SCC president. “Serene Rock and Michael Dzbenski represent the very best of what we strive for – innovative teaching that equips students with the critical thinking skills they need to navigate today’s complex information landscape. Their work not only enriches our campus, but also sets a standard for institutions nationwide.”
In addition, the League of Innovation in the Community College recognized SCC faculty and staff as recipients of League Excellence Awards, including Regina Harrison, Instructional Designer, Center for Teaching and Learning; Dr. Lisa Marsio, Faculty, Archaeology and Biological Anthropology; and Maria Saporita, Faculty, Architecture.
