Observed each November, Native American Heritage Month honors the diverse cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of American Indian and Alaska Native peoples. The observance grew from early efforts to secure national recognition for Native Americans and became a monthlong designation in 1990, when Congress passed a joint resolution signed by President George H. W. Bush. It was created to recognize Native peoples’ contributions to the nation and encourage greater understanding of their heritage. Today, the month offers an opportunity to learn about Tribal Nations, celebrate Native voices and achievements, and recognize the enduring presence and contributions of Native communities.

At Scottsdale Community College, Native American Heritage Month holds special significance. SCC is honored to be located on the tribal land of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, our host and longstanding partner. This connection is an important part of our college’s identity and an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the O’odham and Piipaash peoples, whose histories, cultures and contributions continue to shape the community we share. We celebrate this relationship and recognize the importance of honoring Native voices and strengthening our partnership throughout the year.
