This fall, the Scottsdale School of Film+Theatre at Scottsdale Community College (SCC) invites audiences to experience two unforgettable productions: "Indecent" by Paula Vogel and "12 Angry Jurors" by Sherman L. Sergel. Both plays shine a light on questions of culture, justice, and the human experience, brought to life under the direction of Don K. Williams, SCC’s head of performance and directing.
"Indecent" – A Story of Art, Identity, and Courage
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel’s "Indecent" is inspired by the true story behind the controversial 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch’s "God of Vengeance." Some hailed the play as a landmark of Jewish culture, while others saw it as a betrayal.
"Indecent" traces the journey of the artists who dared to perform it, risking their livelihoods and in some cases their lives to tell a story they believed mattered. It is a moving reminder of the power of theatre to challenge, inspire, and endure.
“'Indecent' is one of those rare plays that speaks to both the past and present,” says director Don K. Williams. “It’s a moving reminder of how artists challenge us to think more deeply about culture, identity, and the freedom of expression.”
"12 Angry Jurors" – Justice in the Balance
Closing the fall season is "12 Angry Jurors," a tense and gripping drama that follows 12 everyday people as they deliberate the fate of a young man accused of murder. What begins as a nearly unanimous decision unravels as each juror reveals their own assumptions, doubts, and prejudices.
The play is a powerful exploration of truth, justice, and the responsibility that accompanies making life-or-death decisions.
“This play is as urgent today as when it was first staged,” says Williams. “It forces us to confront the ways our assumptions and experiences shape our understanding of justice.”
