Coding is the language of technology and offers new ways to think and bring ideas to life. In the classroom, coding enables creativity, collaboration and problem solving – skills that all students need for the future.
Scottsdale Community College (SCC) is hosting an Everyone Can Code education event from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., January 22, in the Student Center (Peridot Room). Representatives from Apple will present many facets of teaching coding and the related curriculum available today for students at all levels.
Who should attend
Educators, administrators, instructional technology coaches, curriculum directors, and lead teachers interested in coding and computer science.
The event is also open to current SCC students and potential students who wish to learn more about Everyone Can Code.
What you will experience
Attendees will receive hands-on experience with programming in Swift Playgrounds (an iPad app that makes getting started with coding fun and interactive for students), explore lessons in the student and teacher guides that allow students in grades 4-8 to dive into immersive coding puzzles to strengthen their critical-thinking skills, and learn why Swift is the ideal language for teaching and learning coding, including how it’s used by professionals to build powerful apps.
Preparing for careers in coding
As technology continues to permeate all facets of society, coding provides the infrastructure backbone. Career opportunities continue to evolve and unfold over time, and today numerous positions remain open because industry cannot find qualified technical workers to fill them. To meet this growing workforce demand, SCC provides many related degree and certificate programs that help prepare students for future employment.
For example, SCC’s Computer and Information Systems Division offers three courses for an Everyone Can Code bootcamp, providing students with a launching pad for their educational journey to prepare for a technical career: Object-Oriented Programming Fundamentals (CIS150AB), Introduction to iOS Application Development (CIS165), and Advanced iOS Application Development (CIS265).
