It was a night of pride, reflection, and new beginnings as Scottsdale Community College’s 2025 class celebrated their graduation. Among the evening’s most powerful moments was a heartfelt speech from SCC alumna Aristina Sanchez, a proud member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the newly appointed Associate Judge for the Salt River Tribal Court.

Aristina’s journey is one marked by resilience, purpose, and deep commitment to community – an experience that resonated with many in the crowd.

“My story is uniquely mine, but in many ways, it echoes the experience of countless adult learners – those of us who had to put our dreams on hold because, well… life happened,” Aristina told the graduates.

After struggling through high school and stepping away from college for more than a decade, Aristina returned to SCC with determination and doubt in equal measure. “Twelve years after high school, with a heart full of doubt but a mind determined to grow, I enrolled in two classes at SCC,” she recalled. “I remember walking onto campus thinking, ‘Am I the oldest student here?’ But I kept going.”

She built confidence and momentum class by class, eventually earning her associate’s degree in General Studies. But she didn’t stop there. Aristina continued on to Arizona State University, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in Public Service and Public Policy and eventually stepping into her current role as an Associate Judge. Two diplomas now hang proudly on her wall – a daily reminder of how far she’s come.

As the first in her family to graduate from college, Aristina reflected on the more profound impact of educational achievement. “In my family, college didn’t just feel out of reach – it felt like another universe. But not anymore. After tonight, our family will have two college graduates – because my little sister Molly is sitting out there among you. I’m so proud of you.”

She also spoke about the power of visibility and the ripple effect of education. “You may not even realize who you’re inspiring just by pursuing your dreams,” she said. “Education is contagious.”

Aristina’s words reminded the audience that SCC is more than a stepping stone – it’s a launching pad. “Without a doubt, I am more educated, more responsible, and more determined because of my time here. Choosing to begin my educational journey at SCC was one of the most pivotal decisions of my life. It opened doors I never imagined and gave me the foundation to serve my community in a meaningful way.”

Her advice to the graduates was simple, but profound: chase your dreams boldly, stay connected to SCC, and return to share your journey one day, just as she did.

Aristina’s story is a shining example of perseverance, purpose, and the power of community. We’re honored to call her an SCC alumna, and we know her words will echo far beyond commencement night.
