The Dual Enrollment Program was designed to provide an opportunity for qualified high school students to enroll in college courses at high school locations, and to earn high school and college credits simultaneously. Scottsdale Community College has established agreements with local high schools to offer selected courses to students who have been identified as candidates for college-level work. Dual Enrollment courses are offered in both academic and occupational areas.

The Dual Enrollment program is primarily geared to high school juniors and seniors. However, select freshmen and sophomores able to take on advanced work can enroll in the program as well. The state (statute) has set a waiver limit which stipulates that no more than 25% of the students enrolled in the program can be freshmen and sophomores.

Benefits of Dual Enrollment

  • Earn College & High School Credit - Dual Enrollment courses meet at the high school during the regular high school day. All courses are taught by college certified high school instructors using the college curriculum and text.
  • Transferable Credit - Dual Enrollment students receive, upon request, a Scottsdale Community College transcript that may be submitted to the college of their choice. Articulation agreements are in place among all Arizona public colleges and universities, as well as several Arizona private colleges. Since Scottsdale Community College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association, students are generally successful in transferring courses to other colleges and universities as well.
  • Save Money - Tuition rate is currently $86 per credit hour (the same as all Maricopa Community College students). This is approximately one third the tuition cost of in-state universities and is significantly less than private and out-of-state universities. Students will also save on book costs and lab fees (which average $864 annually per student at Arizona's three major universities).
  • College Readiness & Reduced College Completion Time - According to the U.S. Department of Education, college credits earned prior to high school graduation reduce the average time-to-degree (0 credits = 4.65 years, 9+ credits = 4.25 years) and increase the likelihood of graduation for students who participate in dual enrollment. In 1995, by linking K-12 to postsecondary education in Georgia, the percentage of high school students taking a rigorous core curriculum rose from 76% to 91% and postsecondary remediation levels fell by nearly 40%.
  • Bridge to College - Students learn and adapt to the rigors of college course work while in a familiar setting. Students learn skills and behaviors that will aid them in college. Having taken college courses will ease students' fears about college.
  • Reduce Course Duplication - Students will often be required to take courses in college that duplicate what they have done in high school. By earning college credits for the work they complete in high school, students will not be required to take courses in college that duplicate their previous studies.
  • Early Occupational Skills - Students desiring to enter the world of work after high school can reduce or eliminate the time required for occupational training. Occupational courses also allow academically bound students to learn skills that will get them better paying jobs during their college careers.
