  • Attend a workshop for students undecided about their careers and majors
  • Enroll in a course that will help you choose a career and major: CPD 102AB Career Exploration; CPD150 Strategies for College Success, or CPD150AC Educational and Career Planning. These courses include a comprehensive, step by step process of self-discovery through a variety of assessments and activities. The self-discovery, interpretation of assessments, and participation in career activities will provide clarity which ultimately lead to an informed career choice. Any of these three classes will guide you through the steps below. These classes are transferable to universities.
  • Speak to an advisor at the Academic and Career Advisement Center about the Career Development Process and create an initial Education Plan

Before you can find the right career path you must know what your interests, skills, abilities and values are. Knowing these will let you build your personal checklist that you can use to see if a career is a fit for you.

What to do:

  • Schedule a one-on-one appointment with a counselor in Counseling Services (SC 108) to explore interests, values, personality characteristics and abilities in order to identify potential career and major options.

After you build your personal checklist for careers you need to shop for potential careers using reliable information sources.

What to do:

  • Meet with an academic and career advisor to discover majors related to your interests.
  • Research career and major options using tools that provide occupation details such as job responsibilities, education requirements, and current labor market information
  • Conduct informational interviews with people in areas of interest to you
  • Participate in experiential learning experiences such as internships and cooperative education classes
  • Meet with an academic and career advisor to discuss how your education plan is impacted by what you have learned.

After comparing different career paths it is time to start narrowing your choices down to one or two areas that fit you best.

What to do:

  • Create a career plan that identifies steps to achieving your career goals.
  • Compare the education paths of your possible choices with an academic and career advisor. How will each choice impact the classes you need? How long will it take to complete each path?

Make a plan and take action to get into the career and major that you have identified as your top choice.

  • Attend a Job Search Workshop or meet with an academic and career advisor to learn job search strategies, including cover letter/resume writing, interviewing and networking tips, and other techniques.
  • Locate and apply for internships and volunteer opportunities.
