Exercise Science: Health, Fitness and Sports Performance

The Exercise Science, Personal Training, & Nutrition program at Scottsdale Community College is designed to prepare students for jobs in the fields of exercise science, fitness, and nutrition.

Students can complete our Associate of Applied Science in Exercise Science: Health, Fitness, & Sports Performance. This AAS degree includes the Personal Training Specialist Certificate.

The AAS degree in Exercise Science also prepares students for National Certification testing, which once complete, allows them to enter the Personal Training workforce. In addition, students have multiple options for University transfer if more education is desired.

SCC’s Exercise Science, Personal Training, & Nutrition program gives students hands on learning experience to prepare them to effectively apply the principles of exercise training to individuals. Our instructors have a minimum of a Masters degrees in the Exercise Science field as well as Personal Training certifications from major organizations.

Nationally Recognized Personal Training Program

SCC’s Personal Training program is nationally recognized by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) for the quality of our education.

We earned this national recognition by offering students comprehensive Personal Training education that includes fitness assessment, exercise program design, and hands-on exercise training techniques. 

Students who attend SCC’s Personal Training program will receive a high quality education that meets the highest Personal Training standards from the NSCA. 

National Recognition as a Silver Level Exercise is Medicine Campus

SCC’s Personal Training program is also nationally recognized by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for being a silver level Exercise is Medicine campus.

Exercise is Medicine is an ACSM campus initiative that encourages 150 minutes of exercise to promote better health & fitness of students on college campuses. 

Student leaders in the SCC Fitness & Nutrition club are involved in promoting Exercise is Medicine at SCC.  These students also gain valuable experiences with performing fitness assessment, program design, and hands-on personal training.

SCC students, staff, and faculty are all committed to achieving the fitness goals this initiative.

Nutrition Certification for Personal Trainers

SCC provides a balanced education to personal trainers by offering nutrition education to compliment their Personal Training certificate and AAS degree. 

Clients often turn to their personal trainers to get nutrition advice.  This means the best personal trainers not only get an education in exercise science and personal training but also nutrition.

The Nutrition for Fitness & Wellness certificate provides personal trainers with the well-rounded nutrition education required to answer client questions effectively.

SCC’s Exercise Science, Personal Training, & Nutrition program provides students with multiple transfer options to Universities to earn a Bachelors Degree. 

The AAS degree in Exercise Science: Health, Fitness and Sports Performance from SCC is transferable to the following degree programs:

  • BS in Exercise & Wellness from Arizona State University (ASU)
  • BS in Kinesiology from ASU
  • BS in Health Science from Northern Arizona University
  • BS in Fitness Specialist from Grand Canyon University (GCU)
  • BS in Sports Specialist from GCU
  • Many other BS programs at Universities around the US

Our Exercise Science, Personal Training, & Nutrition program provides an excellent 2-year education at a very affordable price which makes SCC a great place to start your 4-year degree path.

Graduates of our program can find jobs in the field of fitness as one of the following:

  • Personal Trainer
  • Fitness Director
  • Group Fitness Instructor

The fitness profession is expected to have faster than average job growth at approximately 10% per year.  The median wage is $18.85 per hour and $39,210 annually.

Job prospects should be best for workers with professional certification or increased levels of formal education in health or fitness.

Students who choose SCC’s Exercise Science, Personal Training, & Nutrition program will have many unique opportunities to develop their professional potential and leadership skills including:

  • Fitness & Nutrition Club: Students develop their leadership potential while having a positive impact on the SCC campus & local Scottsdale community.
  • Exercise Is Medicine (EIM): SCC is a Silver Level campus in the American College of Sports Medicine EIM program. We are going for Gold!
  • Forever Fit Project: Student interns provide one-on-one personal training and assist with Group exercise training to benefit Scottsdale seniors.
  • SCC Fitness Center: Student interns help to conduct fitness assessments, design exercise programs, and take clients through one-on-one training sessions.

The AAS degree in Exercise Science: Health, Fitness, & Sports Performance is a two-year degree with multiple University transfer options. Students who complete the AAS degree in Exercise Science will also earn the Personal Training Specialist certificate.
