Credits for specific classes may be awarded as transfer credits from other accredited institutions and/or for previous “work experience”. Suggested pathways for the Certificate are outlined below for completion in four semesters. The pathway involve sa “heavy load”, especially considering that classes are typically so-called lab/lecture classes requiring two 2 hour 40 minute meeting times per week. While 27 hours are required for Certificate completion, Advanced Revit and Sketchup are also recommended – an additional 6 hours. Students who are working part or full time and/or have outside responsibilities that prevent attending school “full-time” often find it better to extend their course work over an additional semester(s). No “minimum time line” is in place – students may proceed through the class sequences at their own pace. Curriculum and requirements are fluid – changing with changing workplace demands. 5708 Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Architectural Technology
Classes are offered in-person (only) day and evening. While some classes are day-only, faculty can, under special circumstances, make accommodations for students who are unable to attend day classes. Faculty believe that the classroom/lab atmosphere is essential for learning this highly technical skill set; in-person classes provide immediate feedback to questions generated during lectures, discussions, and demonstrations, immediate help trouble shooting problems encountered during the completion of assignments, and an opportunity for students to learn from each other as they complete the assigned work.
How long will it take?
Both the AAS and Certificate programs are designed for 4 semesters of full-time coursework as classes are tightly integrated to build on preceding classes’ skills and knowledge. In some cases, if a student’s schedule allows, and ideally if a student has a certain amount of previous experience in hand, course work can be accelerated to a 3 semester framework (but that is a heavy load). There is no “set deadline” for completing of the coursework – students whose daily work or family demands preclude full-time enrollment can complete the required coursework over a longer time frame with no consequence.
It is not unusual for advanced students to find part-time or, in some cases, full-time office work prior to their graduation.
The estimated cost of the AAS program is $5,160 -- 5,650* (tuition for 60-65 credit hours) for Maricopa County residents. Tuition cost for the 27 credit hour Certificate of Completion is $2,382*. An additional course fee of $25 is charged for every ARC class, which is designated for printing costs, printed and physical instructional materials, and tutoring in the open Friday and Saturday lab sessions. Students are not required to purchase a computer or software; software is provided remotely to students who wish to work outside of the computer labs through MySCC on the school’s website. *(at time of this document – verify current costs on the SCC website).
Instructional materials including extensive hard copies and web-based instructional aids and information are provided free of charge to students for all Architectural Technology courses excepting Basic and Intermediate Revit classes. Texts for those Revit classes have a suggested retail price of $80 and a suggested bookstore price of $50 at time of this document --- text costs are subject to change.

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Architectural Technology program is designed to provide the informational, attitudinal, and technical skills required for an entry-level position as a Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) operator in Architectural or Interior Design offices; Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering offices; Landscape Architects' offices or related fields. Computer-aided design using AutoCAD and Revit software forms the core of this program.
Competency-based course work builds on residential and commercial plans developed in introductory courses progressing to a set of Architectural working drawings. Drafting courses are grouped and sequenced by specific drawing types. This allows detailed study and analysis of the theory, standards, and decision-making processes influencing the development of drawings as well as the interrelationships among various types of drawings in the finished set.
Students will work individually and in teams in a professional environment and will develop drawings which incorporate typical design industry conventions and methods, code requirements, and local construction techniques. Lessons are real-world based and are designed to teach responsible problem solving, building from one situation or set of conditions to the next as students create professional quality working drawings.
An Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Architectural Technology is also available.
A grade of "C" or better is required for all courses within the program.
