Everywhere you look, engineering and technology have impacted how we live and breathe in this world — we wouldn't be where we are today without engineers creating, building, and innovating. In educating the next generation of engineers, this program teaches the engineering essentials of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) — the cornerstones of a good engineer. Students will also develop strong analytic and critical thinking skills that will not only aid them in identifying, assessing, and solving complex problems but will be vital in handling conversations and interacting with colleagues on all levels in an organization.

Students at any Maricopa Community College may need to complete courses at more than one of our colleges.

Program Description

There are four main branches of engineering—mechanical, chemical, civil, and electrical—with dozens of sub-disciplines under each branch. Regardless of the particular discipline, engineering means solving real-world problems by applying math and science. This includes designing, implementing, testing, and supervising both products and services, while considering efficiency, cost, safety, and reliability.

Engineers require a diverse set of skills, including communication, teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, life-long learning, time management, computer proficiency, and a mastery of the basics (science, math). Is it important for engineers to get to the right numbers? Yes, but it is more important that they know what the numbers mean and how to communicate them.

Engineering students at SCC will find themselves working on a variety of design projects (wiring circuits, 3D-printing balloon cars, writing code, optimizing rocket stoves, building truss bridges, etc.). These projects will take knowledge they learned in other fundamental courses and apply it to achieve an efficient solution to a problem. The ECE/CSC Open Lab allows students to work on these projects alongside students from other disciplines, while receiving guidance from professors.

Course Format

Classes are offered in a variety of formats: in-person, online, hybrid, day, evening, full-time and part-time.

Most of our courses use low-cost textbooks or no cost material provided by your instructors. General education courses may have textbooks that cost more.
