Myrna de Jesus, Scottsdale Community College’s (SCC) newest representative on the Maricopa County Community College District’s Student Senate, learned from a young age that diverse perspectives can enrich a community. Her father’s former position in the military meant that much of de Jesus’ childhood was spent abroad. Her family travelled across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East before landing in Richmond, Virginia.
As a student senator, de Jesus will work directly with the District to help shape the future of education. Senators provide a vital voice and perspective for the District, the governing board, college administration, and faculty.
De Jesus is looking forward to collaborating with SCC’s student groups to help enhance the campus experience. “Together we can suggest, develop, and implement solutions to create a more vibrant SCC community,” says de Jesus.
De Jesus, a Biological Sciences major, selected SCC as the next step in her path to a career in medicine. After earning a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, de Jesus decided to pursue her medical degree. She chose SCC for several reasons. “In addition to SCC’s low-cost tuition, my advisor immediately helped me identify the prerequisites I’d need for medical school.” The flexible class offerings appealed to her, as did the diversity of SCC’s student body. Says de Jesus, “For me, it is an honor and a privilege to assist my fellow students in achieving academic success.”
De Jesus is no stranger to public service, having served in both academic and church leadership roles. “I like to stay proactive and participate in school activities. I consider the position of student senator a great opportunity.”
When she’s not focused on coursework and her role as student senator, de Jesus enjoys outdoor activities, like hiking, biking, and exploring the beauty of the Sonoran Desert.
SCC's Maricopa Student Senator works closely with SCC's form of a student government, the Council for Student Leaders. CSL is supported in part by SCC’s Center for Civic & Global Engagement, which creates quality programs and services that provide students and employees with curricular and co-curricular opportunities that increase civic engagement and enhance global awareness.
