Writing Center User Policies

Eleven things Every Student Should Know About Tutoring at the Writing Center:

1.  Students must present a student identification number in order to receive services in the Writing Center, including tutoring.  For students who do not wish to use their social security numbers, the Admissions and Records Office (SC136) can provide an alternate number.

2.  Students must be currently enrolled (for credit) in the SCC class for which they receive tutoring.  The Writing Center cannot serve students who are enrolled in other universities, community colleges or non-credit SCC classes.

3.  Students may schedule only 1 appointment at a time and may have a maximum of 1 hour of tutoring per day.

4.  If a student is 10 minutes late for an appointment, the student forfeits the tutorial session, and the assigned tutor may take a walk-in appointment at that time.  If a student accumulates 2 "no shows" (missing or showing up late to an appointment without calling) during a semester, that student is no longer eligible to schedule appointments for the remainder of the semester.  The student may, however, see a tutor on a  walk-in basis if time is available.

5.  Tutors will work only with writers and their papers.  They will not work with a  student who brings in a friend's, spouse's, or classmate's essays, nor will they proofread, edit, or fix a paper that has been dropped off.

6.  Tutors do not edit, proofread, or fix errors in student papers.  Tutors work with students at every stage of the writing process to improve the student's own writing abilities, including editing and proofreading (finding and correcting grammar, content, or logic mistakes).

7.  Tutors will provide proof of tutoring (a pink slip) only when the student spends 30 scheduled minutes discussion and improving his or her work with a tutor.  Thus, students should prepare drafts of their thesis, paragraph, or essay before they see a tutor. 

8.  For safety reasons, no children are permitted in the Writing Center.  Please make other arrangements.

9.  Students are not permitted to have food, drinks, or tobacco products in the Writing Center at any time.

10.  Students must turn off their cell phones prior to entering the Writing Center.

11.  Students are expected to demonstrate mature, respectful behavior toward all Writing Center Tutors, technicians, staff members, and students.

El acuerdo de uso del Writing Center

Once cosas que cada estudiante debe saber sobre la tutoría en el Writing Center:

1.    Todos los estudiantes tienen que presentar un número de identificación estudiantil para recibir servicios en el Writing Center, los cuales incluyen la tutoría.  Los estudiantes que no desean usar su número de seguro social pueden recibir un número alternativo de la oficina de admisiones y expedientes académicos (SC 136). 

2.    El estudiante tiene que estar inscrito actualmente en la clase de crédito de SCC para la cual recibe la tutoría.  El Writing Center no puede servir a los estudiantes que están inscritos en otros colegios comunales, universidades o clases sin acreditación de SCC. 

3.    El estudiante puede concertar solamente una cita a la vez y puede tener un máximo de una (1) hora de tutoría individual por día.  

4.    Si un estudiante llega más de 10 minutos tarde para una cita, él pierde su sesión de tutoría, y el tutor asignado puede ayudar a otro alumno.  Si un estudiante acumula dos (2) "no shows" (faltar  o llegar tarde a una cita sin llamar por adelantado) durante un semestre, él ya no tiene derecho a concertar citas durante el resto del semestre.  Sin embargo, él puede venir sin cita al Centro y trabajar con un tutor si el tiempo lo permite. 

5.    Los tutores trabajarán solamente con escritores estudiantiles y sus propios ensayos.  Los tutores no trabajarán con un estudiante que traiga el trabajo de un amigo, un esposo o un compañero de clase, ni leerán un ensayo que un estudiante haya dejado en el Writing Center.   

6.    Los tutores no editan ni corrigen errores en ensayos estudiantiles.  Los tutores ayudan al estudiante en cada etapa del proceso de redacción para que el estudiante pueda encontrar y corregir sus propios errores de gramática, de contexto o de lógica. 

7.    Los tutores proveerán verificación de tutoría (pink slip) solamente cuando el estudiante pase 30 minutos programados hablando de y mejorando su trabajo con el tutor.  Por lo tanto, el estudiante debe preparar borradores de su tesis, párrafo o ensayo antes de trabajar con un tutor.  Vea el documento titulado "Working With a Writing Tutor" a fin de prepararse para una sesión de tutoría.  

8.    Por razones de seguridad, no se permiten los niños en el Writing Center.  Por favor haga arreglos .

9.    Los estudiantes no pueden tener alimentos, bebidas ni productos de tabaco en el Writing Center en ningún momento.  

10.    Los estudiantes tienen que apagar sus teléfonos celulares antes de entrar en el Writing Center.

Y, lo más importante:

11.    Todos los estudiantes tienen que demostrar comportamiento maduro y respetuoso hacia todos los empleados y estudiantes en el Writing Center.
