Who may use the Writing Center? Any currently enrolled SCC student may use the Center?s Computer resources for academic purposes. For currently enrolled ESL and foreign language students and other students that have current written assignments, tutoring is generally available (by appointment).
What languages does the Writing Center support? Tutoring is available for English, English as a Second Language, French, Italian and Spanish and may be available (by prior arrangement) for German, Japanese and/or Latin (please call for availability). French and Spanish conversation classes are held from time-to-time; please ask about availability
How do I access Writing Center resources? Tutoring appointments can be made at the Front Desk in the Writing Center or by telephone: (480) 423-6416. To access computers, simply log-in with your user name and your Social Security number (or Student I.D.). Username is (1st initial + middle initial + 1st 6 letters of your last name); Password is (your Social Security number the first time you log-in ? you will then be asked to choose a permanent password for the rest of the semester).
Personal Server Space (drive h:) is accessible from any computer once logged in. You must log in to use any computer applications (including the Internet).
What computers / software are available in the Center? Most computers are PCs - some Macs are available. All have standard MS Office applications (Excel, Power Point and Word) and internet access via Explorer or Netscape. Final Draft is on selected PCs; Teach Lessons via SCC VAX is on all PCs. Blackboard and Turnitin.com are both accessed via the internet.
Limited scanning (OCR and image) and color printing facilities are available by request. A pay-as-you-go copier is also available.
Are there charges for using the Center?s resources? Other than a pay-per-copy machine, there are no charges. Printing is free but limited to reasonable use; students are not permitted to print books or texts that may be required for a course and are available in the bookstore or elsewhere.
