HUMANITIES
Are you interested in reading, writing and viewing plays?

THE 111       INTRODUCTION TO THE THEATRE> 3 Credits
An introductory exploration into the unique and vital world of the theatre as both art and craft. Production processes, personnel, theatre history, dramatic literature and theatre criticism will be studied. Humanities credit. Required for Theatre Majors. No prerequisites. (Offered Fall semester only.)

THE 220       MODERN DRAMA 3 Credits>

Learn to read, analyze and interpret plays, which is crucial for all theatre people: directors, actors, designers and audience. Humanities credit. Required for Theatre Majors. (Offered Spring semester only.) Prerequisite EN101, ENG107 or equivalent.

THP 241       PERFORMANCE OF LITERATURE 3 Credits

The study, analysis and preparation for pubic performance of prose, poetry and dramatic literature. Prerequisites: ENG101, ENG 107 or equivalent.

THE 205       INTRODUCTION TO CINEMA 3 Credits

Survey of the history and development of the art of motion pictures, including criticism of aesthetic and technical elements.

THE 210      CONTEMPORARY CINEMA 3 Credits

A study of contemporary films, directors and critics with emphasis on evaluating film as an art form.

THE 118       PLAYWRITING 3 Credits

Want to learn to write plays for the stage? This course is the place to be! Practice and study the theories and techniques of writing for the stage: creating characters, dialogue, and plot for monodramas, scenes, and plays.

THP 112       ACTING I 3 Credits

Fundamentals of acting through physical, vocal and emotional expression, improvisation, monologue and scene work. Develop characterization skills in a workshop setting through group activities,culminating in class performance and scene study. Required for Theatre majors. NOTE: This is the place to begin your college acting study!

THP 212       ACTING II 3 Credits

Continuation of acting study. Focus is on building characterization and performance skills through monologues and scenes from both contemporary and period plays.
PREREQUISITE: successful completion of THP 112 or Instructor Approval.

THP 281/282       PRODUCTION & ACTING I/II
3 Credits

3rd/4th semester acting classes; continuation of monologues, scene study, one-act plays.
PREREQUISITE: completion of THP 212 or Instructor Approval.

THP 271       VOICE & DICTION 3 Credits

Techniques of freeing the voice to produce sound which is compelling, resonant and expressive. Interpretation of literature is also introduced. Not just for actors: a valuable course for any person who is interested in improving his/her spoken communication skills , from teacher to businessperson, from politician to broadcaster.

THP 210       ACTING TV/FILM 3 Credits

Special technical aspects of acting before a camera.
PREREQUISITE: THP 112 or Instructor Approval.

THP 220       ADVANCE ACTING: Television and Film 3 Credits

Focuses on special technical aspects of advanced acting before a camera.
PREREQUISITE: THP210 or Instructor Approval.

THP 214      DIRECTING: THEATRE TECHNIQUES: 3 Credits

Theory and practice of stage directing with emphasis on play selection and analysis, casting, staging, rehearsing and performance. PREREQUISITE: THP 112 and THE 220 or Instructor Approval.
Note: All directing students MUST ALSO enroll in special THP 201 lab.

THP 120AA      AUDITION TECHNIQUES: MONOLOGUE 1 Credit

Learn how to prepare to get the part! This course explores theory and practice of selecting, preparing, rehearsing and performing the audition monologue. Acting I or equivalent experience is recommended.

THP 270      MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP >2 Credits

A class for actors, singers and performers! Study and in-class performance of scenes and solos from Broadway musical literature. Recommended for Theatre Majors and non-majors alike! No prerequisites.

THP213      INTRO TO TECHNICAL THEATRE
>3 Credits

Discover the exciting world of theatre from the "behind-the-scenes" perspective! The class covers the fundamentals of technical theatre production through lecture and demonstration. Topics include design and construction of scenery; lighting and properties. Required lab time to be explained the first class.
Required for Theatre Majors. Recommended for Motion Picture/TV majors. No prerequisites.

THP 216      BEGINNING STAGE LIGHTING
3 Credits

Basic theories and methods of stage lighting. Emphasis on both theory and practical applications,design concept development, and "teamwork" structure of theatre. Examines stage lighting optics, instrument selection, color theory, circuiting and control systems along with basic design.
PREREQUISITES: THP 213 or Instructor permission. Required lab time to be explained the first class.
(Offered Spring semester only.)

THP 267      PAINTING TECHNIQUES FILM, TV & THEATRE 3 Credits

Theory and skills in scenic artistry. Techniques of painting two-dimensional and three-dimensional scenery, tools, and the use of color. PREREQUISITE: THP 213.

THP 115     THEATRE MAKEUP
3 Credits

Theory and practice of up-to-date theatre, film and television makeup techniques in lecture/lab!
Required for Theatre Majors. No prerequisites.

PUBLIC PERFORMANCE
Are you interested in participating in public productions as part of a nationally renowned theatre program? Don't be shy....

THP 201AA      THEATRE PRODUCTION
1 Credits

No books, no tests, no papers----just college credit for working on SCC's mainstage productions. No experience necessary!! Enroll in either the ACTING or TECHNICAL section. Technical staff positions and crew workers, as well as actors, are chosen from this group.
Required for Theatre Majors. Recommended for non-majors. No prerequisites. May be repeated up to 4 times. Students will be assigned to individual production labs requiring minimum 50 hours work.
(Late starting class.)
