Community Service & Volunteer Opportunities

"There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer."

Student Life & Leadership (SL & L) and Student Leadership Forum (SLF) regularly plan organized opportunities for members of the SCC campus to give back to our surrounding community. Such projects include Make A Difference Day each fall, College to the Community in mid-winter for faculty and staff, and Into the Streets in Spring. There is also the Volunteer! Fair each fall, where local agencies visit campus to let us know where we can help out-and, projects like The Clothesline Across Campus, where everyone has an opportunity to clean out their closets and drawers just before the holiday season to donate clothing to those in need. In addition, we have a Volunteer Calendar published two times a year and available to you by an office visit.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPRING 2009

UBS Blood Drives - The Psi Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa proudly sponsors regular blood drives with United Blood Service. You can find the big white and red bus on campus near the Student Center on the following dates for the Spring 2009 term: February 24 and 25, March 31, April 1 and May 5. If you would like to donate or would like more information about United Blood Services, please CLICK HERE or call 480.423.6538.

SLF's Valentine Workshop - Each year SLF asks members of Scottsdale Community College to come out and create a valentine for a senior from Scottsdale Village Square.  You can help by stopping by the Valentine Worshop on Wednesday, February 12, 2009 from 10 AM - 2 PM in the Student Center Cafeteria.  Here, you will find all the materials needed to create a personalized valentine gram for a senior.  We will be delivering the valentine cards on February 12 at 2 PM to the residents of Scottsdale Village Square.  If interested in participating, please call 480.423.6538 or email me at Jorge.Rodriguez@sccmail.maricopa.edu .  For more information about Scottsdale Village Square please visit their website at:  http://www.scottsdalevillage.com/ .

Maricopa County Community College District "Into the Streets" - Please join SLF on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 9 AM as we take time out of classes to volunteer at AZ Animal Welfare League, the state's larget no-kill shelter.  Participants will be able to play with and help clean cages of the animals that reside here.  There is no cost to volunteer and all participants will be provided with a free lunch that afternoon.  Please come out from 9 AM - 1 PM on Friday, March 27.  This is a great experience for both the participants and the animals.

If you are unable to come out that morning, you can still help out by donating much needed items to AZ Animal Welfare League.  These items are being collected by SCC in the Student Life & Leadership Offie, north east side of the SC Cafeteria, from March 2 - 25, 2009.  You can find a needs list at their website: http://dollardays.com/aawl/wishlist.html or for more information about this agency please visit their homepage at www.aawl.org .

American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Scottsdale - Please join SCC students and employees as we help raise awareness and donations for American Cancer Society by participating in the agency's signature fundraiser, Relay for Life.  This year, the event will take place Friday and Saturday, May 8 - 9, 2009.  For more information, please call 480.423.6538, stop by SC 185, or visit www.acs.org .

For more information about participating in any of these volunteer activities, please contact your Student Leadership Forum executive officers or students-at-large at 480.423.6541.
