Learning to Serve ? Serving to Learn
At this website you will find information on Service-Learning at Scottsdale Community College.
What is Service-Learning?
Service-Learning is an exciting experience-based way of learning and teaching that engages students in service within the community as a portion of a class. Students are asked to reflect upon that experience in order to gain a better understanding of course content, as well as to enhance a sense of civic responsibility, encourage lifelong service and to strengthen the communities.
Reflection activities, journals, small group discussions, and consultations with faculty enables the student to internalize his/her learning and to develop a sense of purpose about his/her relations to the larger community.
In an on-going national study of colleges conducted by The American Association of Community Colleges found that students who participated in service-learning reflected the following results:
- 90% of students agreed that academically-based service helped them see how course subject matter can be used in everyday life
- 70% thought that service-learning helped them better understand required readings and lectures, and based on the critical reflection component
- 97% had a clear understanding of the connection between service and learning. Robinson, G. (1999). "Stepping into our Destiny." Community College Journal, 70 (3) 8-12.
