How does Service-Learning differ from Volunteering and Internships?

·        Volunteering –  Benefits the community agency.

It meets the need of others and improves the community as           a whole.

·        An Internship – Benefits the student.

It provides students with hands-on experience that enhances           career objectives as it related to their particular area of study.

·        Service-Learning – Benefits both the student and the community agency.

It focuses both on the service being offered and the learning           that is occurring to enhance the course. A grade is given           for the learning and NOT for the service.

Examples of Service-Learning:

·        An accounting student helping senior citizens with their taxes

·        A Biology student helps with a stream bank restoration project

·        A math student tutoring an elementary student in math

·        A nursing student working with hospice patients

·        Sociology students helping at the local food bank

 Examples of Volunteering:

·        An accounting student serving homeless people food

·        A nursing student tutoring a high school student in English

·        A math student planting a garden at a local senior citizen home

Examples of an Internship:

·        An accounting student working for an accounting firm to gain experience for future employment

·        A nursing student working at a hospital to gain experience for future employment
