Psychosis

A mental disturbance in which people experience severe impairments in the ability to distinguish what is real from what is not real (an ability called reality testing) because of extreme distortions of cognitive and emotional processes. Psychoses generally are thought to have biological causes involving the nervous system, especially the brain.
