Postulate

To assume that something exists or is true as a basis for reasoning or discussion. For example, you may postulate that, learning the meaning of the word "postulate" will help me to get a higher test score. Of course, the postulate may turn out to be wrong: there may be no test questions that require you to know the meaning of this word.
