Getting verbal information into memory by sounding out the letters and/or words. For example, look at the following word list:

hay key pig dog

Phonemic encoding of this word list might consist of the following: hay rhymes with May, key rhymes with see, pig rhymes with dig, and dog rhymes with fog.
