NeurosisMental disorders characterized by depression, anxiety, and/or irritability. Psychodynamic theorists, who first fully formulated the concept of neurosis, claim that neuroses are caused by the individual's attempts to remain unaware of unconscious conflicts. Thus, according to the psychodynamic approach, neuroses involve distortions of reality through self-deception (ignoring aspects of reality that cause one to feel anxiety and pretending that fantasies/wishes are real).
