Refers to anything that minimizes the functioning of an individual.

In psychology, a maladaptive characteristic is one that minimizes the interpersonal, occupational, academic, and other everyday types of functioning in an individual. (see mental disorder)

In biology, a maladaptive characteristic is one that minimizes the overall reproductive success of an individual.
