DeviantSomeone who is deviant differs from what is normal for a group. Deviance generally subsumes[∂] two categories: Statistical deviance refers to a numerical difference from the statistical average (mean, median, or mode) of a group. For example, a male who is 6' 8" tall deviates statistically from the mean height for young American males (which is about 5' 9" when combining the heights for all racial and ethnic groups). Social deviance refers to a behavioral or psychological difference from a social norm[∂] for a group. For example, a man who regularly dresses in women's clothing deviates from a social norm that men should never dress in women's clothes except in rare situations (such as on Halloween). |
