In the psychodynamic approach: a group of associated cognitions that have a strong emotional significance because of their linkage to a fundamental motive. The cognitions, which make up part of an unresolved intrapsychic conflict, are at least partially repressed, thereby causing symptoms of a neurotic disorder.
