Automatic Processes

A set of mental processes that:

  • occur at either the preconscious or unconscious levels;
  • are performed rapidly and efficiently;
  • require little or no mental effort.

In other words, automatic processes are subconscious mental processes that result in involuntary cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioral responses.
