Altered State of Consciousness

A state of the conscious level in which there are significant changes from the normal waking state in psychological and behavioral functioning — changes that involve at least the following characteristics: the cognitions and emotions contained in consciousness, the efficiency of conscious mental processing, conscious perceptions of the external world, and conscious perceptions of the self.
