Refers to anything that maximizes the functioning of an individual.

In psychology, an adaptive characteristic is one that maximizes the interpersonal, occupational, academic, and other everyday types of functioning in an individual.

In biology, an adaptive characteristic is one that maximizes the overall reproductive success of an individual. (see natural selection)
