About the Instructor
I'm Dr. Joseph Ortiz, and I've taught here at SCC since 1989. I am originally from Nederland, Texas...about 80 miles east of Houston. My wife, Diana, and I have six children; talk about communication challenges! Good coffee, major league baseball, and my mountain bike keep me out of trouble. My approach to teaching is one of conversational engagement. What I bring to the classroom is limited to my life experience and formal studies. Thus, it's important to develop a space where learners are free to contribute, create, and critique what we study. We all have something to teach and to learn.
