A Week of World Languages at Scottsdale Community College

 

Scottsdale, AZ (March 25, 2008) -- Scottsdale Community College is pleased to host a Week of World Languages March 31 -- April 4, 2008.  The SCC Department of World Languages offers classes in Spanish, Italian, German, French, Japanese, Chinese, Pima, American Sign Language and Arabic.  Come participate in a week-long celebration of world languages and the cultures they represent! 

 

A World of Opportunities:  Table Fair: Mon & Tues: 10am - 1pm, Wed & Thurs: 12 - 3pm

Language & Communication Building 'Breezeway'

Come check out the ways you can improve or even learn a new language! Pick up brochures about Maricopa-sponsored and other Education Abroad opportunities as well as talk to representatives from several study abroad agencies and SCC?s Conversation Partner Program and Diversity Infusion Program.  On Tuesday and Thursday only, be sure check out the American Sign Language table to learn a new expression or more about Deaf Awareness and culture!

 

Speaker of Deaf Culture: Donna Leff

'My Journey from the Hearing to the Deaf World'

Monday, March 31st, 3:00 - 4:00 PM (ASL Interpreter provided)

Donna Leff will share her experience as the only deaf child in a hearing family, raised orally (lip-reading and speaking, no sign language). Her journey takes you from living in the hearing world, not knowing that other deaf people existed, to her discovery of deaf people, the deaf community, culture and American Sign Language. She presently teaches American Sign Language at Arizona State University and journeys in both worlds; heavily involved in the Deaf Community.

 

A World of Dolls

Ongoing display, Monday - Friday, Student Center Check out this unique display of costume dolls from around the world and get a sampling of the culture of a variety of countries. Presented by Kirby Chadwick, SCC World Languages Department Chair & Spanish faculty.

 

Student Reflections

SCC Spanish faculty Mariú Hernandez-Hall is coordinating a department-wide effort to collect short writing samples from students, which reflect the importance of language study.

 

'Saucy Salsa'

Wednesday, April 2nd, 12:30 - 1:30 PM

Join the Latin Dance craze! Come learn salsa dancing with master teacher Rick Dault as he takes the class through basic salsa steps. No partner needed -- just show up and you can start dancing in a fun and relaxed environment. Open to all. Come and give it a try! Hosted by Laura Ruiz-Scott, SCC Spanish faculty.

 

Italian Film: "Regalo di Natale" (Christmas Present)

Wednesday, April 2nd, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Directed by Pupi Avati (1986). 98min.; General Audience. In Italian with English subtitles.

Four old friends with checkered pasts come back together on Christmas Eve around a poker table; the plan is to skin a rich industrialist. The game stretches into the wee hours as tales of loneliness and bitter reprisals come to light along with fresh betrayals. Hosted by Sirio Calogero, SCC Italian faculty.

 

Explore Costa Rica!

Thursday, April 3rd, 5:00 - 6:30 PM

Travel across the beautiful Central American country of Costa Rica during this presentation by SCC Spanish faculty Albert Shank. Information on studying in Costa Rica will also be available.

 

World Language Book Display

Enjoy various language books on display, including a collection of Oxford Dictionaries in Spanish, Italian and German. Also, pick up a free 'world language' reading bookmark while supplies last, courtesy of the American Library Association.
