Transportation Landscape Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

November 13th Ribbon Cutting at SCC to Celebrate Improvements to Campus Transportation Landscape

Scottsdale, AZ (November 12, 2008) – SCC will host a ceremonial ribbon cutting tomorrow, Thursday, November 13, 2009 at 8:00AM to acknowledge the completion of several recent improvements to SCC’s parking lot and overall transportation landscape.

The College embarked on two phases of pavement improvement projects with a total budget of $2.75M funded substantially from the 2004 General Obligation Bond program.

SCC officials will cut a ribbon to celebrate the newly expanded parking lot (with 221 new parking spaces), yet the celebration represents much more.  The first phase of the work included the following changes:

  • Improvements to Chaparral Road -- widening and creating protected left turns into entrances one, three and four
  • Installation of a traffic light at entrance two
  • Construction of the first leg of the loop road connecting the area near entrance four directly to parking lot H (along the eastern boundary of the College)
  • Facilitated installation of dark-skies compliant outdoor lighting

Benefits of this first phase include improved safety, including protected left turns and a traffic control light, as well as access--the ability to get to parking lots H and I without needing to drive through existing parking lots.

The second phase of the improvement project includes:

  • Creation of the round-about at the top of entrance two
  • Creating loop road paths through existing parking lots B, C, D, E and F
  • Improving utility of Lot C
  • Creating landscaping fingers within campus parking lots (at entrances one and three)
  • Adding landscape islands in parking lots D, E and F
  • Expanding parking lot H by over 200 new spaces
  • Facilitated installation of additional dark-skies compliant lighting

A benefit of this second phase, beyond an increase in parking in one of the busiest parking lots, has been to get much of the traffic onto a loop road and away from campus buildings.  This results in more vehicles traveling on the perimeter of campus and less toward the heart of campus.  This means lower risk of car/pedestrian collisions.
