Scottsdale, AZ (December 12, 2007) ? How can Shakespeare?s films connect to today?s audiences?  Sign up for SCC?s Shakespeare on Film class, beginning January 30, 2008, to explore that question and more.  Class meets on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8:45pm.

Throughout the 15-week semester, students will be presented with film versions of Shakespeare's plays and have the opportunity to analyze how the dramatist's major tragedies, comedies, histories and romances have been presented on film.  If you?ve always wanted to learn about Shakespeare?s works but haven?t had a chance, now?s your opportunity!  Guaranteed to be a stimulating and entertaining class!

Students will review the art of adapting drama to film; learn about the culture of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries and its influences on Shakespeare and his works; review and study Shakespeare?s major tragedies, comedies, histories and romances through films; explore Shakespeare?s characters; and evaluate how the film versions of his works address and examine universal themes such as questions of existence, meaning and knowledge found in Shakespeare?s dramas.  Students in the class do not need to know or have read Shakespeare?s texts.  The class will focus on film.

Seniors and ?pass/fail? students are welcome.

Eric Loring, M.A., M.Litt., will lead students through Shakespeare?s world in film.  Mr. Loring has taught full-time in SCC?s English Department since 1989.  Among the courses he teaches are Introduction to Shakespeare and Shakespeare on Film.  He has traveled to England many times to study Shakespeare, and attended Oxford University where he worked with prominent Shakespeare scholars.  He received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study at the reconstructed Globe Theatre in London and has been granted two sabbatical leaves, during which time he lived in London.
