Scottsdale Community College and the Kelly Lecture Series Present--

"Science is Fun" with Dr. Bassam Z. Shakhashiri

 

Scottsdale, AZ (January 15, 2008) -- Join us in the SCC Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, January 30 for "Science is Fun" with Dr. Bassam Z. Shakhashiri.  Come learn about combustion, exploding balloons, liquids that glow in the dark, polymers, and other spectacular scientific phenomena. 

 

Dr. Shakhashiri is professor of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He is well-known internationally for his effective leadership in promoting excellence in science education at all levels and for his development and use of demonstrations in the teaching of chemistry in classrooms as well as in less formal settings.  Considered the "dean of lecture demonstrators in America" by the Encyclopedia Britannica, Dr. Shakhashiri has given over 1,100 invited lectures throughout the world.

 

From 1984 to 1990 Dr. Shakhashiri served as Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation for Science and Engineering Education.  In 1983 he founded the Institute of Chemical Education (ICE) and served as its first director.  He is the recipient of over 35 awards, including the 2002 American Association for the Advancement of Science Award for Public Understanding of Science and Technology.  Dr. Shakhashiri currently directs the Initiative for Science Literacy.
