SCC’s International Education Students Fold 1,000 Paper Cranes to be Displayed at Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima as a Wish for Peace
Scottsdale, AZ (May 6, 2009) – To support the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima, SCC’s International Education department embarked on a project to create 1,000 paper cranes to be shipped to the monument in Japan as SCC’s wish for peace.
The project was started in the fall semester, 2008, by International Club president Chanda Kim (picture at left teaching staff and students the art of Origami). The cranes were folded by at least 50 people, and finished by club member Claudina Villalobos (pictured below). The 1,000th crane was folded on April 23, 2009.
In Japanese tradition, a person who folds 1,000 paper cranes is granted a wish. In modern day Japan the 1,000 cranes has become a symbol of world peace through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who contracted leukemia from the bombing of Hiroshima.
While in the hospital, Sadako set out to fold 1,000 paper cranes hopin g that she might be granted her wish -- to get well. When Sadako died of leukemia at age of twelve, she had folded 644 paper cranes herself.
After her death, Sadako’s classmates folded the remaining 356 cranes so that she might be buried with 1,000 cranes. Her classmates also raised funds to build the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima.
The cranes folded by SCC’s students will be sent to the Children’s Peace Monument to be displayed as SCC’s wish for peace. Before they ‘fly’ off to Japan this summer, students, faculty and the public are invited to admire the display in SCC’s Student Center foyer.
