SCC?s Interior Design Students Provide Design Assistance and Needed Upgrades to Valley Domestic Violence Shelter

Scottsdale, AZ (January 28, 2008) -- The Scottsdale Community College ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) Student Chapter rolled up their sleeves and completed needed redesigns to multiple rooms at the Chrysalis Shelter, a shelter for women and their children who have been affected by domestic violence.  The center was in need of an update to their main living and dining areas.

Earlier this month, a group of students cleared out the rooms and freshened up the walls with a new coat of paint that was donated by Dunn Edwards. They were able to create a relaxing living space with a new leather sofa and chairs donated by Brix Home in Scottsdale. The women and children at Chrysalis now have a room that is warmed with neutral earth-tone colors and a comfortable place where they can relax. Other local vendors also donated items that helped make this project a success including Sue Bickerdyke Interiors, Dr. John Bickle, Carefree Floors, and Camarena Fine Arts.

"SCC's project to update our rooms was not only well done, but done with such care and compassion," explains Lorie Simms, Director or Community Affairs for Chrysalis.  "In the years I've been with Chrysalis I have never seen the space look so good.  This alone makes the shelter feel more like a home."

SCC's ASID Student Chapter is a group of interior design students committed to education and community involvement. Marcia Gonzales, as the staff representative to the Board, assisted in getting the project off and running. Lori Fraley was the team leader and project originator; Ana Benitez provided the floor plans; and Pam Phillips worked closely with Brix Home to secure the furniture donations.  Debbie English, Lori Fraley, Ann Marie Schara, Ruthie Lehman, and Erryn Smart implemented the designs. The students met their goals of providing a space that was functional, comfortable and beautiful for all to enjoy, while experiencing a real design project.
