Summer ~ 2009

Welcome to the Summer issue of The SCC Insider--our e-magazine geared to the employees and friends of Scottsdale Community College.  As the Spring semester comes to a close, students are busy taking finals, faculty and staff are preparing for commencement, and everyone seems to be in the mood to celebrate the successes of our students.

We certainly have a lot to celebrate.  This Friday, SCC will host its 39th Annual Commencement at 7pm in the main gymnasium.  This year, 944 students earned associate degrees and 932 students earned certificates—for a total of 1,876 students who reached their goals.  We tip our hats to them today.

Before we leave for the summer, I would like to share a few good news stories with you that illustrate your commitment to serving others, the opportunities you provide that allow students to shine, and the different ways you help your students achieve their academic and career dreams.

Thank you for reading The SCC Insider

A Message from our President ~ Dr. Jan Gehler

Jan Gehler
While strains of Pomp and Circumstance dance in my head... Scottsdale Community College's 39th annual Commencement ceremony promises to be a wonderful event -- from the first hint of the Comanche Moon Drum Corps leading all to the hall, to the last strains of Arizona filling the air, sung by our very own Marshall Trimble.

In between we'll acknowledge the accomplishments of many, be inspired by the words and music of students and guests, and rejoice at the parade of 195 graduates recessing through a special honor aisle, taking their next steps to a bright future.  Among our graduates this year are 36 Native American students, 20 veterans and 22 international students from 18 different countries.

While my first year as your president is coming to a close I can think of no better way to celebrate than by participating in our commencement. It is of course, a beginning for the students and for the SCC family as well -- as we look to the beginning of another new and exciting year in 2009-2010.

Have a safe and restful summer.

The Art of Dance ~ Scottsdale Community College Dance Program Educates and Inspires

On the first day of Choreography class each semester, SCC’s dance program director Angela Rosenkrans asks her students the following question:  “What’s the difference between dance and basketball?”   She asks this question because she wants students to think about their art – about the philosophical and physical aspects that are blended in the art of dance.

Claudina and Origami CranesSCC’s International Education Students Fold 1,000 Paper Cranes to be Displayed at Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima as a Wish for Peace

To support the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima, SCC’s International Education department embarked on a project to create 1,000 paper cranes to be shipped to the monument in Japan as SCC’s wish for peace.

The project was started in the fall semester, 2008, by International Club president Chanda Kim.  The cranes were folded by at least 50 people, and finished by club member Claudina Villalobos (pictured here).  The 1,000th crane was folded on April 23, 2009.
