SCC Insider

September ~ 2008

Greetings!

I’d like to welcome you to the first edition of The SCC Insider, the monthly e-newsletter for all SCC employees.  Each month I will include a handful of stories that I think you’ll really enjoy reading.  Since our email inboxes tend to get full very quickly, I will do my best to keep this newsletter short... but interesting.  If you have news to share about a student, colleague or event, or if you have a story idea for a feature-length article, please drop me an email.

Perhaps you recognize the places and people in our masthead.  That's because we’ve designed the newsletter's masthead with you in mind!  In our current version, our colleagues Robert You and Nick Bacon are pictured doing what we do best – helping students succeed, along with students from the SLF program who have been active participants in our terrific student leadership programs.  Each quarter we will change some of the photos to reflect the variety of people and programs that are making a difference in the lives of our students.  You could be next!... (and if you're wondering if the photography student with the camera is taking your picture right now, well... I'll never tell).

Thank you for reading The SCC Insider.  Enjoy your day!

Dr. Jan Gehler

A Message from our President - Dr. Jan Gehler

It’s already September and our feet are moving fast as we carry out this year’s theme -- building from a great foundation to a bright future!

From all corners of the campus we’re having conversations about what we’re doing to promote student success, both while students are with us and long after they’re gone.  This month we will launch a number of new efforts of strategic importance.  With your help we will align academic and student services for a more seamless and successful student experience.  By integrating strategic enrollment management, marketing, and development, we’ll enhance recruitment and retention of students from our community, our state, and nation -- and even across the globe, and build support for the resources it takes to remain a strong and top quality institution.

In addition to this new electronic newsletter, we are moving on several other communications activities.  On September 11 we will hold the inaugural meeting of the college Leadership Team, a 25 member group of employees currently in leadership positions across all employee groups who will meet monthly for the opportunity to share information and discuss issues.  Additionally, I have met with our Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community leaders about some of the best ways to strengthen understanding of our respective needs and thus our partnerships – related to facilities, instructional programs, student services and more.

It’s been a great start for a great year.  Thank you to those of you who helped build the great foundation that is SCC, and to all of you for your energy and expertise in helping shape what I know is a bright future.

SCC’s Film School Alumni Make Waves in Film/Television Industry

James Schopflin
Alumni from Scottsdale Community College’s Motion Picture/Television program continue to accomplish great things in the film and television industry.  Crediting the program and their instructors with providing the skills and hands-on experiences they use daily in their jobs, each has taken their talent and ambitions into a variety of creative directions.  Their journeys follow...

The Making of a Film Festival
"In order to pull off what I did, I had to have great confidence, connection building, and production skills - all of which I gained at SCC's Film School," explains James Schoepflin, a graduate of Scottsdale Community College's famed Motion Picture/Television program.

Schoepflin credits SCC’s film program with helping him make a very ambitious leap in his career.  In 2007, Schoepflin started the Orlando Hispanic Film Festival, an annual independent film showcase that has exploded with growth and popularity.  Supported by a growing number of community leaders, elected officials, and members of the media, Schoepflin, pictured here, concluded the 2nd annual festival on October 12.  “I learned nearly everything that I do now from SCC.”

Ethan Banning

SCC’s Sports Performance Coordinator -- Ethan Banning -- Named Arizona State Director for the National Strength and Conditioning Association

Scottsdale Community College’s Sports Performance Coordinator, Ethan Banning, was recently named the Arizona State Director for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) at the National Conference held in Las Vegas.  He stepped into his new role on July 7, 2008.

As State Director, Banning will raise awareness of the importance of having highly qualified and certified professionals working with young athletes.  According to Banning, qualified practitioners will help decrease injuries, promote athletic development, and safely enhance physical preparedness.

Banning holds the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certificate (CSCS) in the highest regard, and requires all sports performance coaches at SCC to hold the certificate or be working toward one.  “It’s the most respected certificate in strength and conditioning—it’s the gold standard,” said Banning.
