SCC Insider

December 2008 / January 2009

Greetings,

Welcome to the December/January issue of The SCC Insider.  The semester is winding down, students are taking their finals, and most of us are getting ready for the holidays and looking forward to spending time with our families.  Before you go on your way, I'd like to share a few stories with you that were inspired by you, your students and the good services you provide.  From the classroom, to the community, to the workforce and beyond, you'll read stories that reflect the diverse nature of our interests and passions, our commitment to serving locally and globally, and how our continuous learning and sharing is making a difference in the lives of our students, our colleagues, the environment, the underserved, and even to others throughout the world.

Thank you for reading The SCC Insider.  Have a wonderful holiday.

A Message from our President - Dr. Jan Gehler

Dr. Jan Gehler

Thank you to all who have sent messages this way, sharing ideas for working together to address the challenges of current economic demands and to maintain SCC’s reputation for excellence in all we do.  I am confident that the college will emerge from these financially difficult times continuing to reflect the fundamental value of providing high quality educational services focused on student success.  This is our history and it will be our future.  While we may look a bit different when we come out of this financial tunnel, our values and commitment will only be strengthened.   I continue to be impressed daily with our wonderful and caring faculty and staff and am confident that an informed and engaged SCC community will focus on actions that allow us to cinch our institutional belt a bit, while preserving and enhancing our commitment to learning and student success.

The inaugural meeting of SCC’s Planning and Budget Advisory Council (PBAC) occurred December 12, heralding in a process designed to foster transparency, build knowledge and leverage expertise all toward the goal of aligning resource decisions with our strategic goals.  Faculty renewal is scheduled for Monday, January 12.  Tom Trollen and Colleen O’Neill, with help from the college Leadership Team, will help us kick-off our strategic planning process at the All College meeting on Tuesday, January 13.  While the college is officially closed on January 19, I encourage all of us to pause and celebrate the memory and message of Martin Luther King.   And around the nearest corner, our Employee Recognition Breakfast is this Friday the 19th.  I’m told there will be merriment in our music.

In recognition of our community's growing population in need, Bill and I have made a monetary donation to Vista del Camino on behalf of the SCC employees.  We hope our gift inspires others to share good fortune with those among us who are hungry and in need.   May the peace of this season be with you as you gather with family and friends.

ESL Coordinator, John Liffiton, Travels to Morocco on Fulbright-Hays Grant

John LiffitonJohn Liffiton, Scottsdale Community College's English as a Second Language coordinator, spent six weeks in Morocco this past summer to learn about the country's culture, people and history.  The trip was made possible through a Fulbright-Hays grant, which is awarded to educators to increase mutual understanding between the people of the US and people of other countries.

The state department wanted to send US educators to an Arabic country to foster positive relations between the US and those countries.  The Morocco trip gave Liffiton and his colleagues the opportunity to gain a better understanding of Islam through educational opportunities provided by local professors and daily interaction with the people of MoroccoFor full story, click here:  ESL Instructor, John Liffiton, Visits MoroccoPhoto:  John Liffiton in Ait Benhaddou with local resident and tour guide Mohammed, who was in the films Gladiator and Babel

Scottsdale Community College bridges Academic and Career Success for CIS Student Nick Hare

When Nick Hare started in SCC's Computer Information Systems program in the spring of 2008, it was a last-ditch effort to find a career path, he said.  "Up to that point I was four years in with no ideas on a specific path."

Although he explored other program areas, he realized he had not yet landed on his dream career.  "I did well in my classes but wasn't interested in a career in any of them," he said.  "So I decided to jump into computer classes to see if I liked them."

Like them he did.  The Quick Start program at SCC convinced Hare that computer technology was the career path for him.  For full story, click here:  SCC Student Finds Dream Career in Computer Field.

SCC Professor, Manuel Pino, Honored with Nuclear-Free Future Award for Environmental Activism

Manuel Pino, Sociology and American Indian Studies instructor at SCC, traveled to Munich, Germany in October to be preseManny Pinonted with the Nuclear-Free Future Award, a project of the Franz Moll Foundation of Munich.  Pino, a Native American from the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico, was one of two indigenous environmental activists to be presented with the 2008 award.  Jillian Marsh, an elder of the Adnyamathanha community in South Australia, shared the honor with Pino.

The Nuclear-Free Future Award supports the ongoing work of indigenous activists struggling to end the destruction of traditional lands, as well as journalists and scientists who investigate the toxic consequences of radiation.  The award also supports attorneys who defend victims of the nuclear industry, politicians who advocate nuclear disarmament, and communities working to solve energy problems through the use of sustainable fuels.  For full story, click here:  SCC Professor-Activist, Manny Pino, Honored in MunichPhoto:  Manny Pino with Radmilla Cody, former SCC student and former Miss Navajo Nation, who provided entertainment at the Munich celebration.

SCC's Empty Bowls Event Raises $2,000 to Benefit Scottsdale's Vista del Camino Food Bank

 Empty Bowls

Scottsdale Community College, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and the Scottsdale Unified School District joined forces for this year's Empty Bowls event, held Wednesday, December 3 in the Student Center cafeteria.  A minimum donation of $5 bought a dish of pasta served in a special bowl hand-crafted by students from the Scottsdale Unified School District, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and children from Paiute Neighborhood Center's after-school program (pictured at right with Paiute staff).  Over 250 people came out to the event and over 350 bowls were sold.

Proceeds from the event will help restock the shelves at Vista del Camino's food bank and the City of Scottsdale's local food bank--which responds to over 5,000 requests each year for emergency services of food, clothing and shelter.

During the event, SCC presented 7 scholarships to students from Salt River High School and the Scottsdale Unified School District.  Each student received $100 for tuition or books at SCC.  Thanks to everyone who purchased a bowl, and special thanks to Jorge Rodriguez and everyone in the Student Life & Leadership office for organizing this event.

Upcoming Campus Happenings

January 20-21:  SCC information tables (7-9am and 4-6pm) at the LB and PS buildings.  Encourage students to visit the tents at each location where they can pick up campus directional maps, spring '09 schedules, a college catalog, and more.

January 21:  Student Leadership Forum's Spring Club Fair (11am-1pm) in the SC cafeteria.  Students will get a chance to meet with representatives from a number of SCC's student clubs and organizations.  Help students get involved.  Encourage them to join a club!

February 12:  Student Valentine Workshop (1-am-2pm).  Students will get the opportunity to create their own valentines with supplies provided by SLF.  Students can also put a smile on the face of a senior citizen by making a valentine and delivering it to Scottsdale Village Square from 2-3pm.

For information about any of these events, contact Jorge Rodriguez.

A Message from the Marketing Department...

Spring is around the corner, and we have been busy behind the scenes in order to get SCC out 'on the scene' in time for the upcoming semester.  Our vibrant new advertising campaign, known as the "Dream Campaign," can be seen each month in azTeen Magazine, Java MagazineAu Authm Action News, and in the student newspapers of 10 Valley high schools --each ad directing prospective students to our updated 'Dream' web page for more information and action.

If you plan to take in a movie during the holiday break, be sure to watch for SCC's animated commercials (starting this Friday, the 19th) in Harkins Theatres at the Scottsdale Fashion Square, Arcadia 8, Scottsdale 101, Tempe Marketplace, and the Shea 14.  If you plan to watch a little TV in between your cooking, noshing, and late-night wrapping, you may see our SCC commercials on MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, A&E, Cartoon Network, and E! - beginning today.

If you live in and around the Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, East Phoenix, PV or Tempe areas, you may have received our very colorful direct mail piece that went out to about 60,000 households, wowing recipients with some amazing student and faculty images, sharing a variety of program areas and many of the great reasons to enroll at SCC, and most importantly - reminding college-age students to 'Dream Big!'

Just as you are receiving this e-blast, approximately 800 high school students each quarter receive The Artichoke Advantage e-newsletter, a collaborative project between the Marketing Department and our hard-working High School recruiters.  They make the relationships and collect the email addresses, and we deliver breaking news about student success, terrific programs, and campus happenings - with the intention of solidifying those relationships.  After one e-blast and no opt-outs, we received inquiries about programs and requests for tours.  Long term loyalty is our goal, but immediate gratification isn't so bad, either.

We continue to work with academic and administrative departments to create printed materials and graphic art that professionally reflects the uniqueness of each program while supporting the SCC brand identity, including event promotions, academic program materials, and overall identity, communications and presentation assistance -- all guided by a calendar filled with these very important projects.

And last but certainly not least, we're proud to be the messenger of a variety of feature stories about our wonderful faculty, students and staff, published in the Scottsdale Republic, print and online, and in various other publications -- many that you read first, right here in the Insider.  We're certain that with each story published, readers will learn a little more about SCC's programs and successful students, say to themselves, "I can do that, too!",  and be inspired to let us help them realize their academic and career dreams.

Thank you for your partnership and your collaborative spirit.
