Scottsdale Community College Goes Green!
~ SCC Recyclers Pitch in to help Mother Earth ~
Scottsdale, AZ (October 16, 2007) ? Scottsdale Community College today announced the formation of its newest student club ? The SCC Environmental club. The new club was established to coordinate a year round campus-wide program to recycle paper, plastic and aluminum.
Students in the club will promote awareness around campus, organize fundraisers, participate in community service projects, hold membership drives, and education fellow students through in-classroom presentations. The club will also collaborate with the faculty and staff recycling committee on new initiatives and quarterly recycling events.
?Not only will this club help to take care of our environment,? said Thomas Williams, the club?s coordinator,? it will also create a stronger sense of community between students, faculty and staff by making this campus a cleaner place to study, work and teach.?
As part of the college?s daily efforts at recycling, SCC has placed recycling containers at strategic points around campus with labels featuring ?Green Artie? -- the SCC campus mascot who has also gone green. A map of bin locations can be found at www.scottsdalecc.edu/green and will identify the location of each recycling bin on campus.
SCC has partnered with Abitibi Consolidated--one of the largest recyclers of newspapers and magazines in North America.
The student environmental club, in coordination with the faculty and staff recycling committee, will host campus events quarterly that focus attention on a variety of specific topics related to the environment. The first event was held on August 29th, and focused on the benefits of reusable water bottles versus disposable water bottles.
The next event is scheduled for December 4 and will be called ?Get Rid of Your Baggage,? and will focus on discontinuing the use of disposable plastic bags in favor of reusable bags.
The December 4 event will feature a variety of faculty, staff and guests who will be available at tables to share their knowledge of environmental topics, specifically recycling.
Additional event topics in the coming quarters may include solar energy, global warming, building a green lifestyle, preserving your natural habitat, and more.
