SCC's Native American Hertitage Month

November 2008 Native American Heritage Month

Scottsdale, AZ (October 27, 2008) – The American Indian Program and Scottsdale Community College would like to invite you to come and celebrate Native American Heritage Month!

What started in the 20th Century as early as 1915 has now become an annual event for the American Indian communities to promote their diverse cultures within the country.  In 1990, former President George Bush approved a joint resolution designating November “National American Indian Heritage Month.”

Come to SCC and enjoy our events to honor and celebrate Native American Heritage Month:

November 3 – December 1 - Salt River High School Art Exhibit, AIP Offices, SC135/140.  Reception to be held on November 3 from 5-7pm, AIP offices (SC135-140)

November 4 – SCC faculty member -Tia BruisedHead will discuss various topics at 12:00pm in the Peridot Rm.

November 5 – Simon Ortiz.  Mr. Ortiz is an Indigenous poet and writer of Acoma Pueblo heritage who specializes in Indigenous Literature.  Focus is decolonization of Indigenous people’s land, culture, and community.  6pm Presentation in the Turquoise Room.

November 6 – John Valadez, Producer/Film Maker.  The Last Conquistador film screening followed by roundtable discussion.  The world’s tallest bronze statue of Juan De Onate outraged Native Americans who say Onate brought genocide to their land.  Film to be shown at 10:30am in the Peridot Rm.

November 6 – Yellow Bird Indian Dancers - Yellow Bird Productions is a professional entertainment company providing unique and authentic Native American song and dance presentations, including interactive activities. They are an Apache family of experienced professionals who have successfully entertained groups of all sizes throughout the world.  Dancers will perform at 12-1pm in the Cafeteria.

November 12 – Incident at Oglala – The Leonard Peltier Story.  Narrated by Robert Redford, this provocative documentary chronicles the controversial events surrounding the shooting of two FBI agents on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975, resulting in the conviction of Sioux activist Leonard Peltier.  6pm Peridot Rm. SC209

November 19 – Anthony Wakeman.  Inspired by the playfulness of his four-year old daughter as she danced about, Anthony Wakeman created this music for Native American flute.  These melodies capture the haunting beauty of the solo flute and reflect the timeless traditions of Native America.  Wakeman (of the Gunlake Band of Pottawatomi/Oglala Lakota) is an apprentice flute maker to his uncle, the noted artist David A. Montour, and his experience as a craftsman gives his composition greater expressiveness and depth.  12-1pm, East Patio
