Math-Science Field Day at SCC

Valley High School Students Converge on Scottsdale Community College for 2008 Math-Science Field Day

~High school students team up for fun and educational day at SCC?Students build Roller Coaster!~

Scottsdale, AZ (December 14, 2007) ? Valley High School students are gearing up for a day of educational fun at SCC.  The 12th Annual Scottsdale Community College Math/Science Field Day will be held on Thursday January 10, 2008 at the SCC campus from 8:45am ? 1:30pm.

During Math-Science Field Day, high school students will have the opportunity to win special prizes and scholarships to SCC by participating in a variety of competitions.  Over 250 students from over 13 high schools around the Valley attended last year.  This year 300 students and faculty are expected.  Math-Science Field Day consists of the following activities:

·         Math Exam: Teams of high school students will be tested on Algebra 2 / Geometry, Pre Calculus, or Calculus.

·         Science Preliminary Competition: Teams of students compete in a one-hour team format exam on biology, chemistry and physics.

·         Project Competition:  Teams of students will be given a task to complete in a fixed amount of time, utilizing skills from mathematics and science, as well as teamwork.

·         Math/Science Final Competition:  At the end of the day, the students show off their projects, and the top three schools compete in a final round question and answer session on biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Students will have a special project this year:  building a roller coaster!  Students will begin with a question (?what will you have to do to make your roller coaster car [a ball bearing] complete the circuit??), followed by research (students must calculate velocity, kinetic and potential energy and determine how to calculate total work done by friction), ultimately followed by calculations and drawings?and the final product!

The roller coaster will be 8 feet long with an initial drop of 0.5 meters.  The coaster will have one hill and one loop and the "car" must stop as close to the end as possible for the student team to receive higher points during the finals.  There will be approximately 15 roller coasters in the finals.  There will be live video of the coaster competition, and the audience will see on large video screens how the ball makes it through the coaster and whether the ball stops close to the end.

In addition to the competitions, Liberty Wildlife (www.libertywildlife.org) will come to the event to talk to students and faculty about the native wild birds in the state.
