Scottsdale Community College Life/Physical Sciences Departments Celebrates Groundbreaking
Designer richärd + bauer and CM@Risk Barton Malow join Scottsdale Community College to commemorate the start of construction
Scottsdale, AZ (March 4, 2008) -- On Friday, March 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., Scottsdale Community College, Designer, richärd + bauer, and Construction Manager, Barton Malow, will celebrate the construction of the campus's newest facility with the traditional turning of dirt ceremony.
The groundbreaking will be held on the soccer field of the Scottsdale Community College Campus located at 9000 East Chaparral Road in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Chemistry/Physical Sciences Building, which is part of an eight year campus transformation plan, will be completed in two phases. Included in phase one is a new 44,000-square-foot Natural Science facility which will be constructed at the north central part of campus, replacing an existing athletic practice field. The addition of the new facility will complete a three building math and science complex. Upon its completion in May of 2009, Life Science, Chemistry, Astronomy, Physics and Geology studies will be housed in this facility.
The second phase of work includes a 23,000-square-foot renovation to the existing Physical Sciences building which was built in 1970. The renovations, which will accommodate the Sciences, will be completed in December 2009.
One of the key goals of the building is to be illustrative of sustainable design. The building orientation is such that the long north/south exposures control the total solar impact on the building; this is further augmented with the sun/rain screen which creates thermal shading for the exterior of the lab and office blocks. Window openings are minimized on the east and west, and insulated polycarbonate is used where light is desired but heat gain could be an issue.
Natural day lighting and borrowed light is used in the office and interaction areas. The use and integration of landscape as a natural shading component, as well as the use of exterior circulation to laboratory classrooms, mitigates the need for additional air-conditioned space. Outdoor courtyards will be provided shade to permit year round use.
