Scottsdale, AZ (November 7, 2008) – Get global at Scottsdale Community College’s International Education Week – November 17 – 21, 2008 at the SCC Campus, 9000 E. Chaparral Rd., Scottsdale.  Come enjoy special speakers, photo displays, workshops, arts & crafts and more! 

 

International Education week is a nationally-recognized week put forth by the U.S. Departments of Education and State and is celebrated by colleges all across the country.  SCC’s International Education Program will host several events on campus during the week for students, faculty, staff and community members.

Tuesday, November 18

Refugee 101 and guest speakers – 11:30am – 1:00pm in the Turquoise Room

Join us for this unique opportunity to see the world through the eyes of refugees as they share their personal stories and intense living experiences.  IRC Phoenix is the largest resettlement agency in Arizona and has helped to resettle more than 6,800 refugees from all over the world.

Wednesday, November 19

“A Wish for Peace” origami workshop - 12pm – 1:30pm in the Student Center East Patio

Now through December, the SCC International Community Club needs your help making paper cranes!  Come learn how.  In Japanese lore, a person who folds 1,000 paper cranes is granted a wish.  In modern day Japan, the 1,000 cranes has become a symbol of world peace through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a girl who contracted leukemia after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.  The International Student Club will display the cranes at SCC’s Peace Pole in December and then send them to the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima.

Around the World with SCC Students – 2:30pm – 3:30pm at the Student Center East Patio

Meet SCC ESL students from all around the world – Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and more!  They’ll share their countries, cultures and even teach you a few phrases in their native language!  Hosted by Jean Maracle, ESL instructor.
