SCC Theatre Arts Presents the Arizona Premiere of HONUS & ME by Steven Dietz

~ A story about the most valuable baseball card in the world, the boy who discovers its magic, and the relationship through time that helps the boy discover the value in himself ~

Scottsdale, AZ (February 10, 2009) – It’s the spring of 2009 and Joey Stoshack is on the baseball diamond fielding insults from hisHonus & Me team mates.  He has just struck out for the third time.

For 12-year old ‘Stosh’, life just isn’t very good these days.  His parents have divorced and his mother is finding it hard to make ends meet, yet he is coping the best he can.  He loves baseball, but he isn’t the best player on the team--yet he endures the taunting of his team mates on a regular basis.  What’s a young slugger to do?

To earn extra money Joey agrees to clean out a neighbor’s attic, figuring that five dollars could come in handy for his mom.  Although cleaning Miss Young’s attic isn’t how he’d prefer to spend his afternoon, Joey’s luck suddenly changes when he finds the rare – and magical – 1910 Honus Wagner T-206 baseball card among the clutter.

Joey may not be the star player on his team, but he is an avid collector of baseball cards.  Knowing exactly what he has found, he quickly stashes the card in his backpack, hops on his bike, and rides home.  Now he must decide whether he should keep the card or do the honorable thing and give it back.  But something happens in the meantime… something he never would have predicted.

As Joey is drifting off to sleep thinking about Honus Wagner, wondering if the other kids made fun of him when he was a kid, he heard a sound.  He looked over, startled, and noticed that Honus was in the the room with him, sitting in a chair at his desk.

“I looked the guy over.  He was a big man.  Not tall, but solid.  About 200 pounds.  Must have been in his mid-thirties, sort of weird-looking, with big ears and a big nose.  There were bags under his brown eyes, and a tinge of sadness in his face.  He somehow reminded me of Abraham Lincoln.”  ~ Joey Stoshack, from Honus & Me, a novel by Dan Gutman

SCC Theatre Arts is proud to present the Arizona premier of Honus & Me – a story about 1909 World Series great Honus Wagner, the most valuable baseball card in the world (currently valued at over 2 million dollars), and a present-day, down-on-his-luck youngster who finds the rare baseball card decades later.  The card magically transports Honus to the future to help Joey, and Joey is magically taken back in time to game seven of the 1909 World Series in Detroit to garner the wisdom of the greatest baseball player who ever lived.

Traveling back and forth through time, Joey and Honus become friends.  Through Honus, Joey learns valuable lessons about self-confidence.

“Stosh, do you know the secret to bein’ a great ballplayer?

“Don’t tell me, let me guess,” I said.  “Keep your eye on the ball?”

“Nah, any monkey can do that,” Honus said.  “The secret to bein’ a great ballplayer… is to trick yourself into thinkin’ you already are one.”
