A New Chapter for Scottsdale Boomerz

Scottsdale Community College Says Goodbye to Boomerz as They Begin Their 'Next Chapter' in New Location

Scottsdale, AZ (September 28, 2007) ? On October 15th, Scottsdale Boomerz will officially start its ?next chapter? as they transition from their home base at Scottsdale Community College to their new location at Apache School in Scottsdale .  Boomerz chose Apache School to accommodate their anticipated growth.

The group that has gathered up thousands of baby boomers for job fairs, re-careering seminars, retirement planning, and social activities started their program at Scottsdale Community College in 2005 with a handful of ideas and the desire to start a new dialogue about the way people think about the baby boomer generation.  Since that time Boomerz, a Next Chapter Project, has expanded their reach and resources to serve more than 4,000 baby boomers in the local community.

?SCC was pleased to be one of five original partners that received funding from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust to begin the Boomerz program,? said Ginny Stahl, Vice President of Student Affairs at Scottsdale Community College.  ?Under the leadership of Cindy Cooke, Boomerz has expanded from its initial intent and has become active and well-known in the community.  We know they will continue to make a positive impact in our community.?

Boomerz goals are to increase the number of baby boomers in meaningful nonprofit and government volunteer positions; build the capacity of nonprofits for sustainability; encourage private and public organizations to create a new work paradigm that will produce flexible re-careering opportunities for boomers; reach a broad range of individuals and organizations in the Greater Scottsdale area with Boomerz programs and services, and finally, to develop an effective and sustainable organization.

As baby boomers approach the traditional retirement age and determine new personal directions for themselves, organizations like Boomerz will be there to provide assistance, support and resources.  In fact, the seeds of change planted by Scottsdale Boomerz are already being institutionalized throughout the city, such as in how nonprofit organizations are utilizing boomer-age volunteers.

The success of Boomerz in serving as a catalyst for positive change has been great, but there is still a lot of work to be done, according to Executive Director, Cindy Cooke.  ?We?re looking forward to rising to the next level, serving more boomers in the Valley, and creating positive change among nonprofits, government organizations, and businesses in how they utilize this very active generation.?  Moving forward, Boomerz will focus on developing a membership structure, a Social Entrepreneurs? Center, a Board of Advisors, and more.
