Iron Pour Draws Sculpture Artists to Scottsdale Community College on November 8
Scottsdale, AZ (October 29, 2008) – Scottsdale Community College sculpture students, in collaboration with ASU, NAU, as well as students from New Mexico Highland University, will be gathering on the evening of Saturday, November 8th for SCC’s Iron Pour. This is the fourth year SCC has hosted the event and it is the culmination of weeks of preparation.
The event is free and open to the public. SCC is located at 9000 E. Chaparral Rd. The event will be held behind the Art Building (AB) (map: www.scottsdalecc.edu/maps/scc_campus_map.html)
Kickoff of the event will begin with the cupola burn – the lighting of the furnace at 3:30pm, with molten iron resulting around 5:30pm. The Iron Pour event is expected to end at 8pm.

Ted Uran, SCC sculpture faculty member and director of the Iron Pour, anticipates pouring 2,500-3,000 pounds of cast iron.
For months, SCC students have been collecting cast iron scrap that will be melted down in a large blast furnace constructed by Uran, heated to 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit, and transformed into glowing liquid metal to be poured into prepared molds and ultimately turned into unique works of art.
Artists will arrive early to prepare for the molten iron pour. An exhibit of work by artist David Lobdell will be displayed in the Art Building foyer for the entire month of November as part of the celebration of Cast Iron as an art form.
According to Uran, Iron casting for practical purposes has been around since the industrial revolution. However, as an art form, beginning students will be using iron casting to create a type of narrative sculpture – a piece that tells a story visually.
Feel free to bring your friends and family to this spectacle of melting and pouring white hot liquid iron as the red sun sets in our desert sky. Don’t forget your cameras and feel free to tell your friends. T-shirts will be available in a variety of sizes.
