SCC Film Instructor Goes Back To The Basics
Scottsdale, AZ (July 17, 2007) ? Making a film has changed so much in the last 20 years that to compare earlier days with today's methods is like comparing a Model T to a Mercedes SLK. That was the reason Katherine Herbert, the chairperson of SCC's film program, decided it was time to make her own film. The last one she did on her own was at the University of Southern California's film school in 1980.
"I've worked on studio films where I worked with all the departments and knew what their tasks and responsibilities were, but since USC, I haven't made a personal film. It was time I caught up to the all-digital technology that my students use with every film they make."
The film, "The Perfect Purse" is based on a five minute script Herbert wrote. It tells the story of a young woman who, after she's fired from her art gallery job and her boyfriend breaks up with her, feels she needs some solace -- so she buys the perfect purse, or so she thinks.
The brief story plays with the cultural mindset of obtaining that perfect handbag regardless of cost, while also questioning our concepts of fine and not so fine art.
After forming a shooting crew, including 30-year Hollywood veteran Terry Donnelly as producer and assistant director, and finding "perfect" actors, Herbert will direct the three day shoot beginning on Sunday July 22.
