Third Annual Iron Pour Set for November 10

Sculpture Artists Converge on Scottsdale Community College on November 10th for

SCC?s 3rd Annual Iron Pour

~ Iron Pour Lights Up the Night and Draws Artists from Across the Country to Create Unique Glowing Art Forms ~

Scottsdale, AZ (October 4, 2007) ? Just as it seems the weather is cooling down here in the Valley of the Sun, things will be heating up for SCC Sculpture students.  Preparations are being made for Scottsdale Community College to host its 3rd annual Iron Pour to be held on the evening of November 10th.  The event is open to the public and free of charge.  Kickoff of the event will begin with the lighting of the furnace at 3:30pm with molten iron resulting around 5:00pm.

This annual event is expected to draw artists from Kansas, New Mexico, California and all throughout the state of Arizona.  Students from SCC, NAU and ASU will also participate in the Iron Pour.  Artists will arrive early to prepare molds for the molten iron as well as install work in an exhibit that will be displayed in the Art Building foyer for the entire month of November as part of the celebration of Cast Iron as an art form.

Iron casting for practical purposes has been around since the industrial revolution.  However, as an art form, beginning students will be using iron casting to create a type of narrative sculpture ? a piece that tells a story visually.  ?In iron casting for art, the artists use elements and principles of design, combined with content, to tell their story,? explains Ted Uran, sculpture faculty at SCC.

The Iron Pour brings sculpture artists together from across Arizona and the Southwest to work as a team to build dramatic works of art.  For months, SCC students have been collecting cast iron scrap that will be melted down in a large blast furnace constructed by Uran, heated to 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit, and transformed into glowing liquid metal to be poured into prepared molds and ultimately turned into unique works of art.

Like the first two Iron Pour events, students this year will be hard at work breaking old cast iron scrap and coke to fuel the furnace for this year?s pour.  ?Iron casting is hard work but the rewards are tremendous for the students and the public alike,? said Uran. ?This year we expect things to be even bigger and better than last year.  Doing the pour at night will make it visually spectacular for viewers.  It will give some insight as to how much work the artist does to complete their craft.  It is like watching the birth of the sculpture.?
