2006 Football Team Earns Top 20 NJCAA Ranking

New SCC Head Football Coach Leads 2006-07 Team to National Top 20 Ranking in NJCAA

Scottsdale, AZ (June 29, 2007) ? For his first time through a season as head football coach, Doug Madoski has a lot to be proud of when it comes to his team?s accomplishments?both on and off the field.  The 2006-07 Scottsdale Community College football team ended the season with a 6-4 overall record and 6-2 conference record--including a ranking of 16th in the nation in the NJCAA, the National Junior College Athletic Association.

?Being my first time through, I was a little nervous, but it was very exciting,? said Madoski.

The extra challenge this past season was playing top-ranked #5 defending national champion Glendale Community College and # 3 Snow College (Ephraim, UT).  Despite losses to both teams twice (the team?s only losses of the season) SCC played consistently through the season and stayed confident.  ?Sometimes you lose, but you?ve got to get up and try harder,? said Madoski.  ?Even though we had a tough league, they played as one, they played hard, and they got better every week.?

Football technique and strategy are primary when developing a winning team, but Coach Madoski never fails to take a philosophical approach and reinforce values.  ?I use football to teach life lessons,? said Madoski.  ?I tell my team to pick one thing every day that they want to get a little better at, whether it?s on the field, or even being 10 minutes early to class.  Pick something attainable, and don?t lose sight of the goal.  And always learn from your mistakes.?

The victories on the field were only part of the overall successes of the season.  Three players on the team were named Academic All-American for the 2006-07 season:

? Sauders Montague
? Joe Caskey
? Scott Young (Distinguished)

In order to qualify as an Academic All-American, student athletes must earn a 3.60 GPA with at least 45 credit hours.  Distinguished student athletes must earn a GPA of 3.90 to qualify.

By the end of the season, several of the team?s players were recruited by four-year universities and offered full scholarships.  The team?s offensive right tackle, Doug Dedrick, was recruited by Iowa State University on full scholarship, while Alric Arnett, the team?s wide receiver, was recruited by West Virginia University on full scholarship.  In all, 25 players this past season were recruited by four-year universities in Arizona and across the country.

?People are always searching for something more and trying to reach for the next rung in the ladder.?  Madoski said the department works hard to place athletes at good schools where they can play football and continue their education.  ?Academic success is very important.?
