  1. Global Infusion Program
Interested in "bringing the world to your students?" Then consider applying for a
    Global Infusion grant for 2009-10!

The mission of the Global Infusion Program is to promote the infusion of international content into the overall curriculum at Scottsdale Community College in order to produce students who will become productive and globally responsible citizens in a changing and multicultural world.

Sponsored by SCC's International Education program, the Global Infusion Program awards $1,500 grants to selected SCC faculty who add global content to one course that they regularly teach. The grant requires that you: 1) Attend a three-day workshop in mid-May to learn different methods of globalizing your course; 2) Develop a syllabus and course outline that demonstrate how the course has been globalized; and 3) Submit a couple of short reports to summarize which methods worked best for you. Grant proposals will be accepted through April 17, 2009. To get a copy of the grant proposal form, contact Tom Hansen at tom.hansen@sccmail.maricopa.edu  or 480-423-6668.

In the 2008-09 school year, five SCC faculty (Keri Diggins, Roseanne Dlugosz, Susan Moore, Eric Loring and Phil Clark) have infused their classes with content that allows students to gain a global perspective on their various disciplines: sociology, early childhood education, English composition, English literature, and mathematics. If you would like to see what they’ve done to “globalize” their courses, contact Tom Hansen at tom.hansen@sccmail.maricopa.edu

  2. Propose a Global Event
Interested in internationalizing your class during International Education Week or Foreign Language Week? Consider displaying your students' work, hosting an international guest speaker, or sponsoring a special event. Contact Therese Tendick or Kathleen Lueppker
to find out more about submitting your event proposal!

  3. International Faculty and Staff Development
The International Education Programs supports the professional development of its faculty and staff through travel and project grants which eventually benefit the students of Scottsdale Community College.  These projects have enhanced curricula through international and comparative studies, provided a new appreciation for diverse cultures within the classroom or student service, and funded the initial phases of discipline-specific projects or partnerships which were ultimately supported by other sources.

Examples of previously-approved programs include the Fulbright Scholar Program  and the International Faculty Development Seminars with Council on International Educational Exchange.

Applications and International Travel Proposals for any of these professional development programs are to be submitted to IEP by the second Friday of October, December, February, or March. The International Education Committee will review and award mini-grants each of those months.  Final International Travel Reports  are due within 30 days of program completion.  Current Maricopa programs and their application precedures can be found here.

Past SCC participants have returned to their classroom and college roles with fresh global perspectives on their courses, student services, and programs.

"The cultural elements I learned in Mexico have been incorporated not only into the teaching of my class? script development and documentary subject matter, but also understanding the passions expressed in the one-on-one conversations I have with my Spanish-speaking students." -- Penelope Price, Motion Picture/TV Production Faculty; Guadalajara Language & Culture Program, 2006

    "Exposure to another culture, other peoples, and another area of the world provided me with a global perspective of healthcare and post-secondary health education and has already been applied to my teaching of nursing students at SCC." -- Dr. Linda Treloar, Nursing Faculty;
Maricopa International Faculty Exchange Program participant, Australia, 2005

"My new appreciation of both the strengths and weaknesses of globalization and my investigations into outsourcing of jobs and its impact on the U.S. economy have definitely added depth to the economics curriculum in the classes that I currently teach (ECN111: Macroeconomics)." -- Dilip Kumar, Economics Faculty; International Economics Conference, India, 2006

  4. Innovation Grants
Each year, the District International & Intercultural Education office offers the opportunity for faculty and staff to internationalize their programming through
Innovation (Internal) Grants.  Multi-college, innovative and student-oriented projects are encouraged.
"In my EDU293 teacher training course, I use the videos from my experiences teaching math with the hill tribes of northern Thailand to create a conversation on how we can incorporate diverse ways of understanding into the teaching of math." -- Michael Little Crow, Mathematics Faculty; Exploring Math Education Across Nations and Cultures, Thailand, 2006

  5. Education Abroad
Lead a group of Maricopa students on an exciting education abroad course in your area of interest! Check out SCC's education abroad programs and what other Maricopa Community Colleges have to offer and Make the World Your Classroom!  For information on how to initiate a Maricopa study abroad program, check out the study abroad guidelines, and submit the program proposal by the published deadlines (September 1st for the following summer's programs). For more information and assistance, contact the SCC Education Abroad Advisor, Jen Sydow.

"I believe that both the students and faculty learned cultural understanding, flexibility and an appreciation of the arts by living with the Aboriginal and Maori people. We completed art projects that were gifts for the communities and were asked many questions about the commonalities between our Native American and Maori histories.  Our students were valued by our host communities and made more self-aware? I always find ways to incorporate parts of our DVD in my Interpersonal Communication class when we speak about intercultural differences, conflict negotiation, team-building, and perception." -- Linda Hicks, Communication Faculty; Digital Storytelling and Comparative Indigenous Arts Program, Australia and New Zealand, 2004-2006

"This trip provides many students with the opportunity to experience the biodiversity of intertidal marine life for the very first time and the ability to see marine habitats that we have discussed in class. It also gives them first-hand experience with the socio-ecologic issues that threaten the northern gulf of California." -- John Weser, Marine Biology Faculty; Field Study Trip, Sonora, Mexico, 2006
