Recreation Classes
Leisure and the Quality of Life-3 credits, REC120, section 3077-MW, 12:30-1:45pm, 3068-TR, 12-1:15pm. Overview of the historical, psychological, social, and cultural aspects of play, leisure, and recreation and their role in contemporary society. Nature of play and leisure behavior in human development within different cultures and the contribution play, recreation, and leisure make to the quality of life for individuals in today's society. Prerequisites: None.
Leisure Delivery Systems-3 credits, REC210, section 6702-T, 6-9:05pm (starts 2/5), 3005-TR, 1:30-2:55pm. Systematic study of Delivery of Leisure Services in public, commercial, and independent sectors; particular emphasis placed on the urban setting. Prerequisites: None.
Recreation Leadership-3 credits, REC250, section 6600-R (starts 1/24), 6-8:40pm, 3014-MW, 10:30-11:45am. An examination of roles and methods of leadership in leisure services settings. Overview of theories and models of leadership, group dynamics, participant motivation, communication, and face-to-face leadership. Exploration of leadership contexts, including coaching and officiating sports, leading community groups and volunteers, working with persons in various life stages and with varying abilities, and leading different recreation activity areas. Prerequisites: None.
Programming of Recreation Services-3 credits, REC230, section 6775-W, 6-9:05pm (starts 2/6). Foundations for designing, planning, delivering and managing recreational and leisure events. Emphasis on application of recreation programming concepts and practices in a variety of settings and situations for a diversity of participants. Prerequisites: None.
Wilderness First Responder-3 credits, REC240, section ? (time & start date TBA).Course fee $150.
WFR certification is the nationally recognized standard in medical training for individuals working with clients in the outdoors. Many employers in the fields of outdoor education, recreation, tourism and travel now require this 80 hour course for their guides and trip leaders. Students who will benefit from this course include recreation majors, summer camp staff, tourism majors and individuals who spend time in an outdoor setting away from immediate help. WFR certification is valid for three years and may be renewed twice with attendance at a 16 hour Wilderness First Aid course. Students also receive CPR training and must pass the examination for CPR certification. Note – this course is being offered pending MCCCD approval.
Outdoor Activity Classes
Outdoor Adventure Skills-3 credits, REC150AB, section 6701. Course fee $5.
First class is Wednesday, Jan. 30, 6pm PE 137. Subsequent classes are held each Wednesday at 6pm with two weekend trips; 2/23-24 & 4/12-13. Learn and practice basic camping/backpacking skills including equipment selection, wilderness first aid, and “leave no trace” principles. Basic level of fitness required.

Grand Canyon White Water Rafting-1 credit, REC155AD, section 6610.
First class orientation is Sunday, April 6, 8pm, SCC Gym Lobby. Trip leaves Friday, April 25, and returns Tuesday, April 29. Covers basic camping, hiking and rafting skills and an introduction to the geological history of the Grand Canyon. Basic level of swimming and fitness required. This 5 day whitewater rafting adventure includes round-trip transportation from/to SCC, shuttles, camping and rafting equipment, food, and river guides. Travel/activity cost of $475. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 4/7. Enrollment limit – 11.
Indoor Rock Climbing-1 credit, REC155AE, section 3022.
Course fee of $70. covers equipment and facility rental. First class orientation is Wednesday, Jan. 30, 3pm, SCC Gym Lobby. Subsequent classes will meet at the Phoenix Rock Gym (near ASU) on Wednesdays from 3-5pm. Enrollment limit – 30.
Hiking-1 credit, REC155AG, section 6705. Course fee $5.
First orientation class & hike is Saturday, Feb. 2, 8:30am meet at SCC Gym Lobby. Learn basic hiking skills while enjoying the Arizona outdoors (hikes to Superstitions 2/16, White Tanks 3/1 & Wet Beaver Creek 3/29). All levels of hikers welcome. Basic level of fitness required. Enrollment limit – 18.
Introduction to Outdoor Rock Climbing-1 credit, REC155AC, section 6611.
First orientation class is Sunday, March 30, 8pm in SCC Gym Lobby. Date of the trip is April 12-13 . This class will include instruction on safety, belaying, and climbing techniques. The course will be conducted outside - on real rock - and students will have ample time to practice their skills. Students will spend one night (camping) in the field. Travel/activity cost $30. All climbing equipment, some food, permits, and transportation are provided. Basic level of fitness required. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 3/31. Enrollment limit – 16.
Introduction to Caving-1 credit, REC155AB, section 6713.
First orientation class is Sunday, March 30, 8:30pm in the gym lobby. Date of the trip is Apr. 19-20. Participants will learn cave ecology, navigation, safety systems, Leave No Trace principles, anchor construction, lighting systems, equipment selection, rescue situations, group management, ascending techniques and much more. Students will spend one night (camping) in the field. Travel/activity cost $35. Basic level of fitness required. The emphasis on this course is on horizontal caves as opposed to vertical caves. All caving equipment, some food, permits, and transportation are provided. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 3/31. Enrollment limit – 16.
Introduction to Canyoneering-1 credit, REC155AA, section 6714.
First orientation class is Sunday, Apr. 6, 8pm in SCC Gym Lobby. Date of the trip is April 26-27. Participants will learn canyon hydrology, travel, navigation, safety systems, Leave No Trace principles, anchor construction, escape route detection, climbing skills, rappelling, down-climbing techniques, spotting, wading and swimming techniques, equipment selection, rescue situations, group management, ascending techniques, flood and weather identification, and much more. Students will spend one night (camping) in the field. Travel/activity cost $35. All canyoneering equipment, some food, permits, and transportation are provided. Ability to swim and basic level of fitness required. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 4/7. Enrollment limit – 16.
Lake Powell Kayaking-1 credit, REC155AD, section 6711.
First class orientation is Sunday, Feb. 24, 8:30pm, SCC Gym Lobby. Trip leaves Saturday, March 8, and returns Wednesday, March 12, (Spring Break). Leave the familiar and predictable behind and embark on an uncommon paddling adventure on spectacular Lake Powell. There is something for everyone on this kayaking adventure; beautiful canyons, ancient Indian sites, wildlife, and geology. Basic level of swimming and fitness required. This 5-day kayaking adventure includes round-trip transportation from/to SCC, shuttles, equipment, food, kayaks, and guides. Travel/activity cost $425. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 2/25. Enrollment limit – 18.
Mountain Biking the Southwest-1 credit, REC155AH, section 6689. Course fee $5.
First class orientation is Saturday, Mar. 1, 8:30am gym lobby. Class rides; TBA. Class covers basic bicycle maintenance, trail etiquette and safety considerations. Mountain bike/helmet and basic level of fitness required. Enrollment limit – 16.
Backpacking Havasupai Canyon-1 credit, REC155AF, section 6690.
First orientation class is Sunday, Mar. 30, 8pm gym lobby. Trip leaves Thursday, Apr. 17, 5pm and returns Sunday, Apr. 20, 10pm. Hike down to Havasupai Campground on Friday, layover Saturday and hike out Sunday. Travel/activity cost of $145. includes roundtrip transportation, first night motel, campground fees and permits. Basic level of fitness required. Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 3/31. Enrollment limit – 18. |
